Overview

IOPtima, Ltd. (“IOPtima” or the “Company”) has developed a proprietary surgical system for the treatment of glaucoma that utilizes a CO2 laser to improve drainage and reduce internal eye pressure. The Company’s IOPtiMate™ is a unique, laser-assisted surgical tool that enables eye surgeons to perform an accurate Non-Penetrating Deep Sclerectomy ("NPDS") glaucoma surgery, relieving Intra-Ocular Pressure (“IOP”) by thinning the sclera of the eye without penetrating into the eyeball.
The IOPtiMate™ utilizes the inherent physical properties of the CO2 laser to create a self-regulating surgical procedure that functionally prohibits penetration of the eyeball wall - the most common NPDS failure. This layer-by-layer laser-assisted scleral ablation technology combines precision with operational ease and is expected to revolutionize the treatment of glaucoma.

Non-Penetrating Glaucoma Surgery is an extra-ocular procedure that eliminates most intra-ocular complications (e.g., cataracts, hypotony and bleb leakage) experienced with traditional, penetrating surgeries such as a trabeculectomy.  Traditional NPDS results in beneficial clinical outcomes with minimal complications.  Nonetheless, traditional NPDS is very surgically demanding and is therefore performed by only a small number of surgeons, as it requires advanced skills, extensive experience and a long learning curve. IOPtima’s proprietary technology is intended to allow ophthalmic surgeons to easily perform a Non-Penetrating Deep Sclerectomy ("NPDS") procedure with the use of a CO2 laser ("Laser Assisted NPDS"). Initial clinical results show that the procedure has the potential to safely achieve a clinically-significant reduction in IOP, thereby improving patient care and potentially becoming the treatment of choice for glaucoma.
